#9 Job's Lament
I live and yet my lamp of life's extinguished.
My hope has been uprooted like a tree.
This house of clay to dread has been relinquished,
And groaning comes full readily to me.
In honesty my robes were all embroidered,
And justice was the turban 'round my head.
If fear of God by depth could but be measured,
Deep footprints would denote the roads I've tread.
Had I in gold or silver placed my trust,
Had I exulted when the wicked fell,
Then I could say such punishment were just,
That I had earned the grief in which I dwell.
My greatest fears have all around me doubled--
I cannot bear to live a life so troubled.
There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the
other in the year's course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and
the word 'happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.
