The walls we build around us to keep out the sadness also keep out the joy.

#73 Twenty-One

A lost soul wanders
emptiness buried deep inside
drained from all of life
nothing more to hide

A breath would bring hope
a chance to carry on
another day would be born
borrowing life from time

Awaiting my arrival
I create a delay
feeling the warmth of the sun on my shoulders
hoping it would dissipate the pain

I pause to glare at the reflection
forming on the desert sand
watching as the child deep within me
grows deeper into a man

Between the boy and man
lies the laughter , joy and pain
all of life's disappointments
being dealt in one hand

The cards on the table
the dealer had just called
with a quick flip of his wrist
he delivered my fate to all

With an ace and a queen
to my queen and a jack
my fate lying on a table
just realizing that I've lost my life
lost it in a game of chance

Looking back watching it all fade away
having just lost to death
the reaper sat across from me
laughing as I had wept

There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year's course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word 'happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.

--Carl Jung

I seldom think about my limitations, and they never make me sad. Perhaps there is just a touch of yearning at times; but it is vague, like a breeze among flowers.
--Helen Keller

Beginnings are scary. Endings are usually sad, but it's what's in the middle that counts. So, when you find yourself at the beginning, just give hope a chance to float up. And it will.
--Birdee Pruitt (Sandra Bullock) Hope Floats

Sadness flies away on the wings of time.
--Jean de La Fontaine
