#56 Moving Boxes
Acres of archive stacked and a-strewn
about the kitchen-living-dining room
cats bedding sleeping shedding creasing cracking
like myself, cardboard carcass empty
Stark and startling, one's pouting possessions
meaningful miserly treasures
values incarnate offering reflection
Claw on chalkboard recordings that I can no longer listen to
Books inscribed by author for the dearly departed two
obituary photos with cracked glass, broken frames
emaciated ember 'bittered burning remains
love poems elegiac, her portrait on the back
drunken delirious drawings and drafts I thought would never last
and for the morning minute, for a mourning moment
I am taken aback
Only the margins of measure were ever permitted to pass
the petty spiteful shipping gestapo's greedy grimacing grasp
so much was withheld or taken back
and again, for the morning minute
for a mourning moment
I am taken aback
she left my suitcase strung among the few surviving presents
meant for our retirement trips to the beautiful beach house residence
I used it for the treatment centre
I use it to complement my kind friend's couch
...ouch
I am left with my legacy luggage littering the living room
my new living room, like my little living -no room
littered with casualties, cardboard carcass empties
overdue for sorting, banker box baggage
startling and stark how life is reduced
21 coffin compartments to 13 for interment
out of sight, out of mind
it is time to unpack
When a man retires and time is no longer a matter of urgent importance,
his colleagues generally present him with a watch.
R.C. Sherriff
Retired is being twice tired, I've thought
First tired of working, then tired of not.
Richard Armour
O, blest retirement! Friend to life's decline -
How blest is he who crowns, in shades like these,
A youth of labor with an age of ease!
Goldsmith

The challenge of retirement is how to spend time without spending money.
Author Unknown
Retirement is wonderful. It's doing nothing without worrying about
getting caught at it.
