Robyn Sarah

Robyn Sarah Robyn Sarah is the author of several poetry collections, including The Touchstone: Poems New and Selected (1992) and Questions About The Stars (1998), as well as two collections of short stories. A new collection of poems, A Day’s Grace (2003), has just been released by The Porcupine’s Quill.

Born in New York City in 1949 to Canadian parents, she grew up in Montreal, where she still lives. She is a graduate of the Conservatoire de Musique et d’Art Dramatique du Québec, where she studied clarinet, and of McGill University, where she honoured in philosophy. Her poems began appearing in Canadian periodicals in the early 1970s, while she completed an M.A. in English.

In 1976, with Fred Louder, she co-founded a small literary press, Villeneuve Publications, and co-edited its limited-edition poetry chapbook series which included first titles by August Kleinzahler, A.F. Moritz and Bruce Taylor, as well as her own second collection, The Space Between Sleep and Waking. She taught English at Champlain Regional College for 20 years, and since the mid-1990s has been a frequent contributor to Canadian newspapers, including The Globe and Mail, The Gazette (Montreal), and The National Post--writing book reviews and op-ed columns on education, literacy, language, and a variety of other topics. Her monthly column on poetry, Poetic License, ran in The Gazette from fall 2000 to fall 2001.

Her poems, stories, and essays have been published widely in Canada and (since 1993) in numerous U.S. publications, including Poetry, The Hudson Review, The Threepenny Review, New England Review, North American Review, the Antioch Review, Michigan Quarterly Review and Quarterly West.
