#137 Gazing at Wide Country
Dedicated to my father
Thomas N. Okafor, teacher and preacher.
The exercise and discipline of Tae Kwon Do always erased irritations,
That coated my routine as a black woman meandering through the maze,
That is named but not heard, so I attend Tae Kwon Do, religiously,
For,
Tae Kwon Do wrestles my spirit.
It combs this body with punches.
Tae Kwon Do fixes frustrations.
Relocation pumps my heart. It sings the heart of the nation.
Another beginning; another chance for Alice in wonderland.
Relocation to Kansas jams stiff reaction:
'It's jus flat.' From Tae Kwon Do teacher.
I thought that he meant the hun jin.
My partner broke protocol of discipline:
'There's nothing there 'cept corn fields,' he jabbed.
'No ocean or lakes, just heat and sun;' another jab.
Another hun jin floored me. Needless to say, I lost the fight.
I carried irritation in my heart,
But it pulled down my shoulders,
And drew lines on my face.
'All hope is lost, when Doctor Tae causes frustration.'
I left the gym with shoulders that sunk into an empty heart.
For my heart was loaded with extra weight.
I turned to mother, but cosmic elements cut me off.
So, I recalled the words that she had fed into me:
'Stand firm on the ground. Listen to your heart.
Connect with earth and sky and all in-between.'
This led me to Wichita and the garden of inspiration,
where I felt wide country:
Wide country that stretches my eyes to the domain of memory,
Where landscape of imagination is watered by contemplation.
You salute my body with hefty winds,
You assault me with crowds of wind,
That wrestle my path as I jog by the lakes of Rock Road.
Wide country that washes eyes with waves of acclimatization.
Rain, hail, sun and all that fight for space and wrestle irritation.
You caress my body with waves,
That soar to abode of memory.
Wide country, you are the one that defies poetic imagination.
My dears, you need to see the place,
To imagine its essence, and drink the cup of wide country.
'Bare feet' I stand on my yard, to think about my place, in the scheme of things, so that I can uphold my stand as a right. I am on the body of Mother Earth, in the wide part of her body, soothed by her breath. Kansas. I soak in this connection and plot pots of poetry.
"If you want to know the past, to know what has caused you, look at yourself in
the PRESENT, for that is the past's effect. If you want to know your future, then look at
yourself in the PRESENT, for that is the cause of the future."
--Majjhima Nikaya
"Let go of your attachment to being right, and suddenly your mind is more open.
You're able to benefit from the unique viewpoints of others, without being crippled by
your own judgment."

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their
lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
