#90 Little Girl Grows Up

A little girl stood with her daddy,
Protected from all the bad in the world,
She felt like nothing could ever harm her,
Her innocence, not yet broken, beautiful.

That little girl grew up and went to high school,
Drama club, soccer games and home ec.,
Friends, sweet sixteen, and prom,
Almost a woman but still daddy’s little girl.

Graduation’s over, Freshmen year is here,
That little girl does off to college,
She steps into the real world for the first time,
Daddy is back home worried about his little girl.

That little girl catches a young man’s eye,
They start dating, but the little girl is still innocent,
The little girl thinks she is in love,
But the man just wanted a casual relationship.

The little girl was heartbroken and crushed,
She had started to grow up,
She got a new group of friends, partiers,
She had her first drink before Thanksgiving.

Right before Christmas break she went to a party,
Designated driver she had no alcohol to consume,
But a man saw her innocence and put a pill in her coke,
That little girl lost her innocence against her will.

She woke up a few hours later and knew what happened,
But decided to keep it in her heart and not tell a soul,
That little girl knew now she had to grow up,
For six weeks later she found she was pregnant.

She felt scared and alone. Daddy was so far away,
She, herself was going to be a mommy soon,
But no one would believe she hadn’t chosen this,
The little girl pondered her options and made a choice.

The clinic was cold and she walked in,
All she told the receptionist was “I have a problem, ”
She waited for the doctor alone in a white room,
But an hour or so later her problem was solved.

From that day on her life full of regret,
One problem solved but many more created,
That little girl went against everything she believed,
And now that little girl was a grown woman.

Regret filled that little girl’s life,
She thought of going to see her baby everyday,
Made plan after plan but never went through,
Until one day, she got the courage and joined her baby.

You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.

Your families are extremely proud of you. You can't imagine the sense of relief they are experiencing. This would be a most opportune time to ask for money.

The purpose of a liberal education is to make you philosophical enough to accept the fact that you will never make much money.
