#56 June 2

So many emotions are running races in my mind.
None of them are winning, and none begin to fall behind.
The goal of graduation is finally coming near,
And these emotions will explode inside of me, I fear.

Seems like just yesterday I was a freshman, shy and scared,
Watching all of the seniors, gosh they looked so big up there.
Now that my time has come, I'm scared and excited and sad,
But I'm ready to go and ready to leave Mom and Dad.

I'm going to cry so much as I walk onto the stage,
And I'll look at my classmates, not wanting to act my age.
Yet I will be happy looking back on all I've achieved.
But that day and that moment I still can't quite yet conceive.

My high school memories will always be precious to me.
They hold a place in my heart that no one can touch or see.
But I'm going off to college, the next step in my life.
Hopefully it won't cause me to feel any pain or strife.

As I think about this, my emotions still run a race,
Fighting over who will beat the others to take first place.
But in unison, I'm afraid, they'll cross the finish line,
For graduation will bring them out all at the same time.

You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.

Your families are extremely proud of you. You can't imagine the sense of relief they are experiencing. This would be a most opportune time to ask for money.

The purpose of a liberal education is to make you philosophical enough to accept the fact that you will never make much money.
