#41 Graduation Goodbyes
The moment slows its motion,
And as I look around this room,
I can't help but ask myself,
How could this happen so soon?
Everyone is smiling proudly,
Taking pictures and laughing together,
I know at times things seemed so slow,
But now I want this to last forever.
It's a scary yet joyful feeling,
Knowing we've made it this far,
Knowing that we'll always be friends,
No matter where we are.
Taking a last walk to the desks,
That we used to hate with a passion,
Remembering daily trips to the lockers,
In our loud, un-orderly fashion...
Now the sounds have totally changed,
No more high school bells will ring,
Instead the future calls our names,
And its time to discover what it will bring.
One by one we each walk up,
To receive diplomas with a smile,
Four years used to seem so long,
But honestly it only took a short while.
Suddenly our time is up,
It's time to fly from the nest,
Time to reach for the higher goals,
And to you I wish the very best.
So wipe away all the tears,
Tears of joy and parting sadness,
It's time to face the oncoming future,
And fondly remember high schools madness.
You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of
it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an
alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.
Your families are extremely
proud of you. You can't imagine the sense of relief they are experiencing.
This would be a most opportune time to ask for money.
The purpose of a liberal education is to make you philosophical enough to
accept the fact that you will never make much money.
