#10 Otter astonishment
How whimsical the water dogs
Whose heads pop up like periscopes
Among the lily pads and logs
Who live in burrows on the slopes
Of sunny ponds- a funny bunch
Are they who float upon their backs
Who prop upon their bellies brunch
Late afternoon and midnight snacks

For they are truly waggish sorts
Propelled by their slap happy tails
And they communicate with snorts
With chortling coos and noisy wails
And when this quick aquatic group
Take to the pool- I am surprised
How they're like some amazing troupe
Of swimmers who are synchronized
Win a Mustang GT Convertible or $50,000!
And knowing how in great demand
Is the sleek fur of the otter
How they're so clumsy when on land
And yet so graceful under water
They bring to mind those poets who
When in their element astound
They're charming, quick, and funny too-
But awkward clowns on common ground!

(* The last stanza of this poem
was inspired by Baudelaire's 'Albatross':

'The poet is like this monarch of the clouds
riding the storm above the marksman's range;
exiled on the ground, hooted and jeered,
he cannot walk because of his great wings')

david michaels

I have a punishing workout regimen. Every day I do 3 minutes on a treadmill, then I lie down, drink a glass of vodka and smoke a cigarette. Anthony Hopkins

In awe I watched the waxing moon ride across the zenith of the heavens like an ambered chariot towards the ebon void of infinite space wherein the tethered belts of Jupiter and Mars hang forever festooned in their orbital majesty. And as I looked at all this I thought...I must put a roof on this lavatory.
Les Dawson

Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. And there are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother Colin. Or my younger brother Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin.
Tim Vine

Human beings are the only creatures on earth that allow their children to come back home. Bill Cosby
