#27 Twenty-Nine
Happy birthday, you daughter of mine,
Today is the day you turn twenty-nine.
Unfortunately there will be no celebration,
You get nothing but a congratulations.
No party, no presents, no feast on which to dine,
You get nothing at all, now that you're twenty nine!
Now, now, my daughter, don't you protest,
Just because you're not having a big birthday feast,
Doesn't mean you can't have a good day,
Now stop that crying and be on your way!
Her parents waited until their daughter was gone,
Then they laughed and they danced and they broke out in song.
She believed us, she bought it!
Yelled her mom with a cheer.
She finally fell for it this year!
When they finished laughing, they got to work post-haste,
There was so much to do and no time to waste!
The turkey had to roasted until it was brown,
The pudding had to be heated and then cooled down.
It was twelve on the dot when the guests burst through the door,
All with candy and cookies and presents galore.
We've got to get going, she arrives at half past!
So they all set to work and they cleaned super fast.
They hung ribbons, confetti, banners balloons,
And before they knew it, it was half past noon.
They turned off the lights, lay down on the floor,
And a twenty-nine year old came through the door,
She was pouting and sniffling, with tears in her eyes,
When the guests jumped up and yelled, SUPRISE!
She couldn't believe it, she'd gone crazy or blind!
There was a party, and presents, and a feast on which to dine!
Sorry we tricked you! said her dad with a shout.
We just didn't want you finding out!
But his daughter didn't mind a bit,
She didn't whine or scream or throw a fit.
She hugged her parents, then whispered in their ears,
I can't wait until I turn thirty next year!

Real birthdays are not annual affairs. Real birthdays are the days when we have a new birth.

Even at our birth, death does but stand aside a little. And every day he looks towards us and muses somewhat to himself whether that day or the next he will draw nigh. - Robert Bolt
