When once a love so thick, now brittle
crumbles between fingers or a laugh at a thumb
bounces off only walls of heart, not teeth
and now at once, for once, the dimming, grinning
glow of admiration settles like ember,
the distant sound of a bell,
a distant bell sounds in a church
where lovers pray and prayers
love in hands with thickening
bonds not brittle flames of laughter
fleeting, old letters let her
be the letters black on black
with only light of heart- one
heart and once was two.
But time again envelops heart
like shark a rapid tooth full gulp
that bite by bite and grin by grin
diminishes as the unfriendly
leaf of an hour, mercifully
slumbering on the shoulder of a breeze.
When once a lover lay on shoulder
boned by promise, now rests and folds
like a pleat in that same wind to
let the leaf tumble, tumble down,

Our wedding was many years ago. The celebration
continues to this day. ~ Gene Perret
The difficulty with marriage is that we fall in love with a personality,
but must live with a character. ~Peter Devries
Infatuation is when you think he's as sexy as Robert Redford, as smart as
Henry Kissinger, as noble as Ralph Nader, as funny as Woody Allen, and as
athletic as Jimmy Conners. Love is when you realize that he's as sexy as
Woody Allen, as smart as Jimmy Connors, as funny as Ralph Nader, as athletic
as Henry Kissinger and nothing like Robert Redford - but you'll take him
anyway. ~Judith Viorst, Redbook, 1975da

A man reserves his true and deepest love not for
the species of woman in whose company he finds himself electrified and
enkindled, but for that one in whose company he may feel tenderly drowsy.
