#102 Anniversary Gift
Last night I wrote
the most beautiful poem for you
It makes me cry
just to think about it
That most wholesome work of art
filled with the life we share
and all the love
the wonderful, wondrous feelings
I've never had before
that I now have for you
Everything I never believed
could be told with simple words
And as I lay down on the floor
silent and replete
with complete happiness
that the next day you would finally
know just how I feel
A phantom appeared
gray as the night that it came from, it
stole upon the window pane
and snatched the poem
from my desk - threw it
onto the street below
as he disappeared faster than time
I rushed to the window in a blind fury
only to find
no signs of the poem
I searched the streets for hours
A silent scream arose from within me
so to avoid any internal bleeding
I had to let it all out
Shaking the stars 'til they lost their light
smashing the sky with all of my might
- that must have been the thunderstorm
you heard late last night -
til finally I found myself
too weak to walk away.
Our wedding was many years ago. The celebration
continues to this day. ~ Gene Perret
The difficulty with marriage is that we fall in love with a personality,
but must live with a character. ~Peter Devries
Infatuation is when you think he's as sexy as Robert Redford, as smart as
Henry Kissinger, as noble as Ralph Nader, as funny as Woody Allen, and as
athletic as Jimmy Conners. Love is when you realize that he's as sexy as
Woody Allen, as smart as Jimmy Connors, as funny as Ralph Nader, as athletic
as Henry Kissinger and nothing like Robert Redford - but you'll take him
anyway. ~Judith Viorst, Redbook, 1975da

A man reserves his true and deepest love not for
the species of woman in whose company he finds himself electrified and
enkindled, but for that one in whose company he may feel tenderly drowsy.
